Global Issues Greatest Hits!

Stand and move and walk across the water.
Peel the cover from the city.
Watch its insides twitch and smoke and rotate endlessly.
Sinking. Moving deep beneath the water.
Lots of other worlds exist.
Soon enough we’ll tear them open.
Soon enough we’ll break them too.

Swimming. Watching concrete eat the ocean.
Metal fingers scrape the skies.
The windows look like Christmas lights from out here.
Floating. Counting clouds. They’re slowly fading.
Blending in with cardboard skies.
Soon we’ll manufacture replicas.
It’s all replaceable.

From the sky, the train tracks look like stitches.
Like they’re holding the world together; like it’ll blow any minute.
And I’ve got another thought I’ll keep to myself.
Until the skeletons walk free. Until the make-up all comes off.
There’s nothing new to discover, there’s nothing new to invent.
There’s nothing new to think that hasn’t been thought of before.
And there’s nothing to believe we haven’t already forgotten.
There’s nothing left, there’s nothing new, there’s nothing—
No, no, no, no.
And I’ve got another dream I’ll keep to myself.
Until the tyrants are dead and the patriots are swallowed whole.
And I’ve got a bottle I can aim at the center,
Full of letters, as a kid, I’d always meant to send.
We’d speak our minds and change the world.
We’d fix the past and pave the way.
But now we’re fresh out of heroes; now we’ve run dry on hope.
There are no saviors in technology: just quick fixes.
And holes, within holes, within holes, within you.
And a place to hang my head, and convince myself there is no difference.

The message of 'Metal Fingers' by Electric President is not completly obvious. The true meanings are hidden between figuritive language. At first, this song may sound gloomy, but the lyrics have a meaning, that has a large part to do with Global issues. For example in the first verse, the singers are describing how our world is smoky and un functional. It also describes how other worlds, like ours exist, and if we ever get to them, we will break and tear them too, like what we have done to our Earth.

In the second verse, you really have to think about what the lyrics mean. For example " When concreate eats the ocean". This does not litrally mean concreate is eating but it means us humans are covering the ocean with more land then we already have, covering it with concreate. This verse also says " Metal fingers scrape the skies'. This brings a very strong image to mind, which is the purpose. Metal fingrs are sky scrapers and they are getting taller and taller.

In the third verse, the singers describe the train tracks look like stitches holding the world together. This means that our world is falling apart. Later in the verse, they says theres nothing to discover or invent. It means we have used all our rescouces and there nothing more we can do.

This song has a negative message. The lyrics are quite gloomy and the music is very dark at the beginning.

Why is organizing so difficult?

Organizing a group or community activity is difficult because it is hard to communicate the idea to the people you want involved. If the message is not advertized in a interesting fun way, the people don't want to do it. For example, Our Global issues class wants to start a reusing program, where students and teachers return 3 Connie's plastic containers to Connie's, and receive a free cinnamon bun. We are having a difficult time advertising because teachers are not aware of what they have to do ( give cards out to students). Students may also lose the cards, and are to lazy to get a new one. It may also be to expensive for people, even its a good cause.

If our Global issues class works hard at advertizing and communicating our idea to students and teachers about this great reusing program, it will be successfull. However, if we just expect people to know about it themselves, then we will not be successfull, causing our wonderful idea to fail.

Swine Flu

What is swine flu???

Swine Influenza (flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. The death rate among pigs is low, with most infections occurring in the late fall and winter. In the past there have been a few cases of swine flu transferred from person to person, but it was limited and not sustained beyond three people. Recently, however, the disease has been passed on from one person to another, even if they haven't had direct contact with pigs.

Interesting facts

76% of the world have electricity.
24% do not.
Of the 76% who have electricity most use it only for light at night.

I find this fact important because I realize that I am lucky, not only because I have electricity but I am in the small percentage who use electricity during the day. When I think about this...I feel a bit selfish. We are the people who are using the worlds resources. However our school could help save electricity by having solar panels ( There is plenty of sun in Malaysia). Also, in the future, if our school ever builds a new school, they can build bigger windows, to let more sunlight in.
